Built by: Easy Breadcrumb, with Pathauto
Four levels deep: Home › Documentation › Getting Started › Installation › System Requirements, all read from the URL /docs/getting-started/installation/system-requirements.
The pattern
Tree of pages: each page references its parent, and its URL alias is its parent's alias plus its own title. The URL then carries the whole ancestry, and a location breadcrumb reads it back.
When to use it
Documentation, handbooks and policy manuals: content that editors arrange as a tree by picking a parent page, without thinking about URLs. The trail, and the URL, follow the tree to any depth.
How it is configured
- Add an entity reference field that points at the same content type. Here it is Parent page (
field_parent) on Documentation page. - Give the root page its alias by hand: /docs.
- Add a Pathauto pattern for the content type at Configuration › Search and metadata › URL aliases › Patterns:
[node:field_parent:entity:url:path]/[node:title].url:pathis the parent's alias, so every child extends it. - Easy Breadcrumb needs nothing more than the settings of the location pattern.
Pathauto builds an alias when the page itself is saved. After moving a page that has children, regenerate the aliases of the branch (Bulk generate on the Pathauto settings), or the children keep the old path and trail.
